Problem

The motive behind every engineering innovation is to solve a problem. Here, we will introduce the problem currently faced in Singapore.

Lack of Uses of sedimentary rock from Jurong Rock Cavern

Currently, the use of sedimentary rock locally has very limited uses - mixed with tar for road construction or placed along beaches for road construction.

Therefore there is a lot of excess sedimentary rock material, making them potential concrete aggregates to effectively utilize these resources.

Huge stockpile of unused sedimentary rock on Jurong Island

The excavation of the Jurong Rock Cavern has led to a hugh stockpile of sedimentary rock that occupies 3.7 million metre cubed and weights 6.2 million tons. There is an abundance of this rock and hence it is very suitable to be used as concrete aggregate, especially since it has limited uses.

Pollution

Currently granite is used as aggregate for concrete, unfortunately the mining of granite causes different types of pollution problems.

AIR POLLUTION is caused from emissions of pollutants from the exhaust of saws and transport vehicles at granite quarries

WATER POLLUTION is caused due to the accidental drainage of fuels or lubricants from machinery of transport and exploitation flow

DEFORESTATION as granite sources are found in places with vegetation and forest. For granite quarrying to take place the forest cover has to be removed
